Delta Sigma Pi Closes Chapters for Hazing

Aug 23, 2018 – The Board of Directors of Delta Sigma Pi recently voted to close the Gamma Omicron Chapter at the University of San Francisco and the Iota Psi Chapter at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

These actions were taken with full support of university administrators and were based on investigations into credible allegations of long-standing violations of University and Fraternity policies, specifically hazing.

This marks five chapters closed in the last year due to either operational challenges or worse… policy violations. One of our Strategic Priorities is to expand to at least 250 active collegiate chapters over the next few years from the 223 we currently have. While we have celebrated the addition of new chapters this year and welcome new colonies on a regular basis, we will NOT compromise our values and principles for the sake of growth. We aim to conduct ourselves according to a higher standard and the safety and well-being of our members and associates will always be our top priority.

Dangerous and unhealthy behavior of hazing and excessive drinking, and disregard for school rules, state laws, or Fraternity policy has no place in higher education or Delta Sigma Pi. Schools are enforcing stricter regulations and state legislatures are writing new laws to eliminate this behavior. Delta Sigma Pi should be a safe, healthy and positive experience for business students to learn, connect, grow, and socialize in a responsible manner. We live in a world which is increasingly intolerant of poorly performing Greek-letter organizations, and anyone who violates our principles jeopardizes tarnishing our brand in a national scope.

Everyone must do their part to help Delta Sigma Pi be a Fraternity that people are proud to be a part of, that employers can depend on, and that you can leave a legacy for future business students. Delta Sigma Pi does not condone inappropriate behaviors including, but not limited to, hazing, discrimination and sexual harassment.

Delta Sigma Pi’s Risk Management and Insurance policy states that anyone failing to enforce it or report violations is subject to fraternity discipline.  Activities that jeopardize our brand can’t be tolerated and each and every brother should work to stand against it. We have a duty to intervene when our fellow brothers fail to uphold the oath that binds us, and when notified in a timely manner, staff and volunteer leaders can deploy additional resources for training, support, or corrective action in order to prevent a situation where chapter closure is the only option.

We hold our collegiate brothers to the same #DSPHigherStandard as any other member of this organization, and do not take any concern that comes our way lightly. So while these closings sadden us, we can move forward knowing the sooner we work together to identify possible issues, the greater the possibility it can be quickly addressed, leading to a lasting positive experience for our members and those with which they interact.

If you have questions or concerns about a member or chapter, please contact your local elected leader or the staff at Central Office.
