Kultured Misfits: Embracing Differences and Building a Brand

Oct 18, 2023 – Kultured Misfits founder and creative director Lindsay Barnette, Kennesaw State (GA), discusses her clothing brand and how it all started with Delta Sigma Pi.

Lindsay Barnette comes from a family of entrepreneurs, having grown up working in her family's vending machine business, and credits starting a business as being in her bloodline.

Her growing company, Kultured Misfits, is a unisex clothing brand based in Atlanta. The clothing is for people who feel like "misfits” and encourages us to celebrate how our differences make us stand out. Barnette knew she wanted to create a clothing line because of her interest in branding and self-expression.

Lindsay developed and based the name of her company on a college friend group. This group was special to Lindsay because it was a safe, open forum filled with people of all different backgrounds. The students had discussions where they disagreed but could always come back together by their next meeting. As Barnette dove deeper into her clothing line, she said, “I thought about that group of friends and recognized we were a weird group of people. We were the ‘misfits’ of campus. We looked very random, but I walked away (each time we met) feeling ‘cultured.’” With that, Lindsay had her brand name, Kultured Misfits.

Delta Sigma Pi has been with Kultured Misfits since its inception. Lindsay enlisted the help of Nu Pi Chapter at Kennesaw State when she started developing the brand. She said, “A true family-like atmosphere comes from being a part of Delta Sigma Pi. They helped me get it launched… My first two purchases were Nu Pi brothers.” To this day, some of those brothers still work with Kultured Misfits. “I couldn’t see it any other way, they’re family to me now. At the end of the day, they—out of our friendship, out of our brotherhood, out of whatever commitment they had toward me—helped accomplish and start this brand. I owe all of that to them.”

Brother Barnette was on Shaquille O'Neal’s show  The Game Plan, which showcased Atlanta-based small businesses. Lindsay also discussed her story on his podcast, The Big Podcast with Shaq, which led to him supporting the company and wearing Kultured Misfits gear on-air. Shaq is not the only impressive individual involved with Kultured Misfits. The company has worked with cosmetic brand LYS Beauty, musician Quavo and the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs.

Lindsay graduated with a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Kennesaw State. Before working on Kultured Misfits full-time, she held different social media roles with WarnerMedia and the Atlanta Hawks.
