Learn about Deltasig’s New National Service Initiative: Literacy

Sep 24, 2024 – Literacy includes reading and writing, and financial, technological, social, emotional, cultural, health and civic literacies.

The National Community Service Committee recently evaluated Delta Sigma Pi’s national initiative and decided to add the philanthropic focus to literacy.

This expansive scope will allow members to evaluate their local needs and utilize their collective strengths and resources in an appropriate and impactful way while supporting literacy. By supporting literacy, chapters and other members can participate in many different service activities in their community. Brothers can help volunteer at local schools with reading programs, libraries with tutoring and reading support, long-term care facilities with reading programs and other service locations in their area.

Literacy is not limited to reading and writing, and chapters can create and host events centered around educating or participating in financial, digital, health and civic causes. Below are some specific programs that members can volunteer with to participate in literacy:

  • Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library - Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book gifting program that mails free, high-quality books to children from birth to age five, no matter their family’s income.
  • Reading Partners - Volunteer at Reading Partners and spend one hour a week helping students gain lifelong literacy skills that will empower their learning.
  • MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership - MENTOR was created to expand the opportunity for young people by building a youth mentoring field and movement, serving as the expert and go-to resource on quality mentoring.
