New Mexico Walks for Breast Cancer on MDDAY

Nov 29, 2016 – Gamma Iota at New Mexico participated in the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Breast Cancer Walk, along with more than 2,000 others.

The walk is a fundraising and awareness event with the goal of ending breast cancer. The noncompetitive 3-5 mile walk takes place all over the nation and anyone can participate. More than $750 million has been raised since 1993 to help fight breast cancer.

VPCS Lindsey Berger heard about the event and decided to organize a team to participate. The event took place at the Cottonwood Mall in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The route went over the Rio Grande and circled back to the mall.

Four brothers and two pledges participated in the walk. "What makes this service so meaningful is how much it raised in the past couple decades toward the great cause of helping those who currently have breast cancer, know someone who has breast cancer or who are breast cancer survivors," said VCPO Brandon Thomas. He also talked about how fun and easy it is to participate. "Anyone can participate as well, and people can volunteer or sponsor these events in their local communities to  help raise awareness and support those affected by breast cancer."

According to Brandon, the chapter is planning to attend more events like this in the future and make donations as well. He said, "It's a great way to support our local community and be part of something bigger."

If your chapter participated in a Make A Difference Day event, please submit high-res photos and summaries to magazine@dsp.org to be featured in our magazine.
