Ohio State Dances to Help Eradicate Pediatric Cancer

May 10, 2017 – Nu at Ohio State participated in the BuckeyeThon Dance Marathon to help raise funds and awareness to beat pediatric cancer.

BuckeyeThon is the largest student-run philanthropy at Ohio State and has the ultimate goal of ending childhood cancer. The organization works to raise money to support the kids treated at Nationwide Children's Hospital, which is Columbus, Ohio's Children's Miracle Network Hospital and will treat any child regardless of a family's ability to pay. In fact, it is estimated the hospital provides $2.5 billion in charity care each year and was ranked in U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Children's Hospitals."

BuckeyeThon hosts multiple events and activities throughout the year, including a Miracle Miles 5k, a fashion show, a CarnOval and its largest, a dance marathon. The dance marathon brings together thousands of buckeyes and was held in February on Ohio State's campus. As the largest dance marathon in the nation, BuckeyeThon raised over $1,510,000 in 2016.

This year, Nu teamed up with the AKPsi chapter at Ohio State and together the team raised more than $18,000! "Our brothers are extremely passionate about BuckeyeThon and its goal to end cancer. As a result, this motivated them to use knowledge gained from Delta Sigma Pi to email friends and family, launch social media campaigns to utilize our networks, and some even held self-fundraisers throughout the year," said chapter president Hannah Hoffer. "Dancing for 12 hours is definitely exhausting, but spending that time with your brothers is incredibly fun. In addition, the families of the children from Nationwide Children's Hospital that we support are invited to the event so being able to see the direct impact, even a simple smile, from the kids is incredibly rewarding."

Participating in the events isn't the only way the chapter contributes to the organization! In fact, three brothers assume leadership roles within the 120-person general body that helps run the organization. One brother acts as the family programming coordinator and two are in charge of the marketing and media promotions.
