National Hazing Prevention Week is September 23-27

Sep 23, 2024 – National Hazing Prevention Week is an annual awareness campaign that seeks to educate, empower and eliminate hazing in all its forms.

According to Delta Sigma Pi’s risk management policy, hazing is defined as any intentional, knowing or reckless act committed by a person, whether individually or in concert with other persons, against any individual or group of individuals, regardless of affiliation, for the purpose of recruiting, joining, pledging, initiating, admitting, affiliating, or for the purpose of retaining membership in an organization that causes an individual or group of individuals to break laws or violate fraternity policy; cause physical or emotional harm, or jeopardize an individual or group's safety, regardless of a person’s willingness to participate.

The 2024 theme is National Hazing Prevention Week is “Be the leader. Prevent hazing. The focus is to educate, advocate and promote awareness. Hazing is often portrayed as a rite of passage or a method for fostering camaraderie among group members. However, it's crucial to understand that hazing is harmful and should never be tolerated in any organization. If you witness any hazing activities, please speak up and report your concerns to your District Director, Chapter Advisor, Regional Vice President, or the Delta Sigma Pi Central Office.

According to Hazing Prevention Network:

  • A 2017 research study found that approximately 22% of Americans reported experiencing hazing. This harmful practice affects everyone involved—the individual being hazed, the person perpetrating the hazing, and the organization itself.
  • 71% of those who experience hazing report physical, emotional, or mental challenges, including loss of control and empowerment, post-traumatic stress, illness requiring hospitalization, and, in some tragic cases, death. Meanwhile, individuals who engage in hazing may face suspension, expulsion, legal consequences, and media scrutiny, all of which can tarnish their reputations and lead to feelings of shame and guilt.

How can chapters participate in #NHPW?

  1. Host Awareness Events: Utilize resources from the Hazing Prevention Network to guide your chapter through essential exercises and key information. Refer to the CMP Guide for recommendations on risk management events and proper reporting procedures.
  2. Share Personal Experiences: During National Hazing Prevention Week (NHPW), survivors and those impacted by hazing often share their stories.
